No academic qualifications required – just that you pass a Recruit Test and are in a good state of health and fitness.

Future prospects

You’ll start your naval career as an Able Rate. On completion of Leading Physical Trainers Qualifying Course you will be promoted to Leading Hand. If you show the right commitment, skills and academic ability, you could become a Commissioned Officer. Members of the Royal Navy are promoted on merit. Work hard and you can rise through the ranks.

Things to consider

Your Royal Navy career begins with 10 weeks’ basic training at HMS Raleigh, a shore base in Torpoint, Cornwall. The discipline, teamwork, organisational, firefighting and weapon handling skills you learn here will stay with you right through your career.

This is followed by the 26-week Leading Physical Trainers Qualifying Course which covers a wide variety of both academic and practical subjects. Students learn instructional techniques and the practical aspects of taking PT classes, plus fitness principles, diet & nutrition, circuit and weight training theory, anatomy and physiology, fitness testing and sports administration.

The course also covers basic coaching and officiating across a whole host of sports, plus experience of adventurous training and challenging activities.

At the end of your Apprenticeship training you will have achieved:

Level 3 Apprenticeship – Personal Trainer.

On successful completion of this apprenticeship the Personal Trainer will be eligible to apply to become an Affiliate of the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) and a Member of the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS).

You can also gain academic qualifications such as GCSEs, A-levels, even a degree. As well as helping you develop your Royal Navy career, everything you achieve will be recognised and valued by future civilian employers.
