As part of your role, you will be:

  • Erecting, maintaining and repairing masonry structures using specialist cutting tools
  • You will also be using a variety of specialist tools and equipment to lay bricks and spread and remove excess mortar
  • As part of your training you will need to observe work being carried out and replicate it to a high standard

The successful apprentice must be able to cope with the physical demands of the role as you will be working outdoors in all weather. You will be supervised by an experienced, fully qualified member of their team, who will guide you and assist you in all aspects of your on-site training. Another part of your duties will be to make sure that all tools and equipment used is cleaned and put away at the end of each day.

Whilst on-site, you will be required to meet a high level of health and safety when conducting the tasks that you carry out. You will also be required to use the necessary Personal Protective Equipment at all times while you are working on-site.

Desired qualifications

Qualifications required for this role include GCSE's grades A*/9– E/2 in maths and English, or equivalent qualifications.

On completion of your level 2 apprenticeship with the company, should there be a permanent position available within the company, you will be offered this position. 

About the employer

REB Southwest were established in 1982 and have over 30 years of experience within the building industry. Their main focus is in groundwork and stone, masonry and bricklaying on commercial sites such as schools and hospitals. They have supported several apprentices throughout their apprenticeships, many of which have progressed onto their level 3 qualifications. REB Southwest are a very supportive employer with a thorough understanding of what an apprenticeship entails, and the work required, so are very committed to invest in another apprentice. A recent piece of work undertaken by REB Southwest, was to carry out renovation work to a Grade I listed building at Royal William Yard in which they achieved a Royal Institute of British Architect Award. They pride themselves on producing the high standard of work which you would expect from a company with many years’ experience in the construction industry.

The Apprenticeship in Bricklaying will include:

  • Level 2 Bricklayer Standard 
  • Construction Skills Health, Safety and Environment test – CSCS Test

As part of the apprenticeship programme, attendance is required at our Skills Group training centre. All other aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site by the employer.

Whilst at the Skills Group training centre, you will learn the necessary skills and gain experience to help you throughout your role. Part of your training will be knowledge and theory based, whilst the rest will be practical. Learning additional skills will benefit you on returning to the employer.
