As an Apprentice Care Assistant you will develop your skills and knowledge to provide excellent care and support to the company’s service users, also working towards becoming a qualified and competent Care Assistant.

Your main duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting care assistants, helping to support service users with mobility, toileting, washing and dressing, also supporting them to undertake these tasks themselves in order to promote independence
  • Helping to create a warm and homely atmosphere to enhance the mental well-being of service users
  • Assisting care assistants to ensure the well-being of service users and that of their relatives or key individuals in their lives
  • Assisting with mobility and movement. Once competent and authorised using hoists, wheelchairs and associated equipment to assist service users which will include the use of taught manual handling techniques
  • Reading, understanding and implementing care plans, also assisting care assistants to develop and update these by attending reviews and participating in assessments
  • Serving meals including preparing tables/trays and cleaning dining and any other rooms, also supporting service users with eating and drinking
  • Attending and participating in the delivery of supervisions and appraisals to aid individual development
  • Attending staff meetings and training courses as required in order to further knowledge and skills within this job role
  • Following appropriate and authorised training, and under the supervision of medication trained staff, give pre-measures, prescribed medicines (after 6 months in post)
  • Undertaking all health and safety training and awareness activities and being aware of emergency procedures and responsibilities within this area
  • Caring for the personal belonging of the service users including money and valuables in line with the company procedures. Ensuring bedrooms, beds, laundering and clothing is kept tidy
  • Any other activities that are appropriate to the job level to aid the smooth running of the home

  • To have GCSE Maths and English at grades A*-E or equivalent entry level 3 or above qualifications in these subjects

Future prospects

Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship it is expected to offer the position permanently and fit the person within the full shift pattern.

Things to consider

Applicants need to be at least 18 years old due to the nature of the role which involves personal care of individuals. Salary Months 1-3: £105 - £129.50 per week (dependent upon shifts worked) Months 3-6: £150 - £185 per week (dependent upon shifts worked) After 6 months: £180 - £222 per week(dependent upon shifts worked and successful completion of probation period) Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship: £231 - £284.90 per week (dependent upon shifts worked) Total working week hours: 30 - 37 on alternate weeks when ready. This role would see the successful candidate complete a probationary period. Upon satisfactory completion of this, the candidate will have the opportunity to work towards a larger amount of hours and a pay-increase, dependent on employer’s decision. Coverage Care has been providing nursing, residential and respite care services for older people and those living with dementia or a disability throughout Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin for the past 18 years. Training provider

As part of the apprenticeship the candidate will be working towards a workplace training plan within their organisation as well as working towards the apprenticeship framework components with Telford College. The candidate will achieve the following qualifications:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care (Adults)
  • Level 2 Certificate in Preparing to Work in the Adult Social Care Sector
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English at level 1
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills

In addition, we adapt the support package to the individual apprentices to ensure they receive the correct level of support and help throughout their apprenticeship, e.g. the shadowing period can be reduced / increased.
