    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

    You will be working 40 hours per week between Tuesday – Saturday with day release to college being on a Monday, and a day off between Tuesday and Saturday. Shift patterns will be arranged at the start of the apprenticeship.

The successful candidate will be fully supported throughout their apprenticeship programme by a qualified member of staff who will teach you the skills and knowledge you need to know to fulfil your qualification.


Throughout your apprenticeship you will learn how to combine this with creative hairdressing and barbering techniques to meet the individual requirements of your client. You will master:


  • Colouring
  • Cutting
  • Setting and styling skills


through ongoing practice sessions on models in preparation for your assessment on clients.


You will also be given the chance to learn about scalp massage this will help you gain customer service skills and the confidence to interact with different clients, by asking them about the service you are giving.


We recognise that salons are becoming more reliant on technology to communicate with their clients, and to promote their salon services, styling team and latest offers, and their apprenticeship training includes an ICT element that enables learners to develop their skills to use social networks in a safe and professional way.


Your duties will include keeping the work area clean and tidy throughout the day. You will also be made aware of company processes and procedures including health and safety in the workplace.

Future prospects

Once you have completed the level 2 qualification, you will have the opportunity to work towards a level 2 barbering qualification, followed by an advanced level 3 in hairdressing.

Things to consider

Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage (ANMW): As from October 1st 2016 the National Minimum Wage for Apprentices is £3.40 per hour. This is the legal minimum pay per hour applying to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their apprenticeship. For apprentices 19 or over who have completed their first year and are continuing their apprenticeship, the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. For more information visit:

This modern unisex salon is based in the Weston Mill area of Plymouth and attracts a varied clientèle of all age ranges and from all areas of Plymouth. The salon has been established for a number of years and they are very keen to train apprentices who will remain in the salon. Their staff are friendly and professional. The salon is modern, spacious and busy. They offer the full range of hairdressing services and bridal hair and also offer beauty therapies. They offer a variety of services including skincare, facials, massages and beauty.

Training provider

The Apprenticeship in Hairdressing includes:


  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English
  • Emergency First Aid
  • Certified Health and Safety Course
  • Internet Safety / Safeguarding


Most aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site and you will have regular visits every 2 to 4 weeks from your designated assessor from Skills Group, who will monitor your progression throughout your apprenticeship.


However learners will receive off-site training one day per week, usually on a Monday, at our dedicated hairdressing salon. During these sessions they will gain additional knowledge of the sector and improve upon their hairdressing techniques.


As an additional qualification, Skills Group will help you achieve your Emergency First Aid and Health and Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.
