    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage rates are £4.05 an hour for 16 - 17 year olds, £5.60 an hour for 18 - 20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship(usually one day per week).

Duties to Include:


  • Shampooing
  • Mixing colours
  • Stock – keeping it tidy
  • Retail sales
  • Learning all aspects of hairdressing on the shop floor
  • Answering the telephone and making appointments
  • Reception greeting and booking clients
  • Maintaining salon – cleanliness, sweeping, cleaning sinks and floors, mirrors
  • Supporting stylists – holding equipment
  • Make tea and coffee

Future prospects

Will be working 37 hours per week on a shift pattern including Saturdays and one late evening. To be agreed with the apprentice. To become a level 3 stylist and learn advanced cutting.

Will have to work Saturdays Will have to work late evening Old fashioned salon Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage (ANMW): The National Minimum Wage for Apprentices is £3.40 per hour from 1st October 2016. This is the legal minimum pay per hour applying to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their apprenticeship. For apprentices 19 or over who have completed their first year and are continuing their apprenticeship, the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies.

About the employer

This is a Ladies and Gents hair salon in a beautiful old listed building in the centre of Maldon.  The salon has been running for over 20 years and is very busy with regular clients.
