    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

An Apprentice required to work in a busy salon environment whilst receiving full training in all aspects of hairdressing such as consulting with clients, cutting, colouring and styling hair.

Duties to include:

  • Working with a range of clients
  • Carrying out receptionist work
  • Ensure the salon is kept clean and tidy at all times

On completion of the apprenticeship the successful candidate will receive the Level 2 Hair Professional Standard.

  • Some work experience would be advantageous but not essential.

Personal qualities

  • The successful candidate must be well presented and take pride in their appearance.
  • They must also be self-motivated as well as a team player and be able to follow instructions.
  • They should be keen to learn about the hairdressing industry and willing to work hard.
  • Punctuality and reliability is essential.        

Qualifications required

  • No formal qualifications are required for the role however an interest in current trends and fashion as well as creative flair would be desirable.

To become a qualified hairdresser with own clientele.

Things to consider

You may be required to work Saturdays and one late night a week. You will be required to make beverages for clients. From 1st of April 2017 the National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 or over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. Those between the ages of 19-24 who are in their second year (or third year) need to be paid the National Minimum Wage for their age bracket.

Training provider

You will receive full training in all aspects of hairdressing in order to complete your NVQ Level 2 qualification. Functional Skills in Maths and English are provided for those who don't have GCSE (or equivalent) grades A*-C in either subject.
