    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a friendly, hard working team at one of the best riding schools in Cambridgeshire.

Within the role the successful applicant will be working towards a Level 2 Diploma in Horse Care and may progress to an Advanced Apprenticeship in Horse Care (Level 3).

Duties include:

  • Mucking out.
  • Tacking up and untacking for lessons.
  • Grooming and caring for the horses on a daily basis.
  • Poo picking.
  • Customer service.
  • Cleaning tack.
  • Keeping the yard tidy.
  • All other horse care duties in line with your apprenticeship.

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Previous knowledge of working or owning a horse would be preferred but not essential.

Personal qualities

  • All applicants must have a desire to learn and be punctual.

Qualifications required

  • GCSE's (or equivalent) at grade C or above in Maths and English preferred but not essential.

Future prospects

Opportunity to move onto the Advanced Apprenticeship should the position be available for a suitable candidate.

Things to consider

Working with horses requires working in all-weathers. The successful applicant will be reliable and trustworthy and know the importance of working as part of a team to provide the best care and attention for all of our animals and client alike. Ideally a Full UK Driving Licence will be held as no accommodation is available. Although there is public transport passing within 5 minutes of the riding school. Important Other Information: It is a requirement that all learners with a start date on or after 01 May 2017 must receive 20% of their training off the job. Training on the Apprenticeships Programme for 16 to 18 year olds is a priority and fully-funded by Government. Training for Apprenticeships for those over this age is part funded, with employers expected to make a part or full contribution. Scallywag Riding Club is located in the beautiful village of Sawtry just off the A1 within easy reach of Huntingdon and Peterborough, the riding school was set up in April 2005 and has an outstanding reputation. We are extremely lucky to have some amazing horses and ponies who are happy to take both beginners and advanced riders, we have nice facilities and miles of beautiful off road hacking around our own fields and bridleways. We like to get our customers involved with looking after the horses and ponies not just riding but providing the all round horse experience. There is always lots going on around the yard and we have clubs which the children can become members of like saddle club for the younger children or pony pals for the more advance riders. We hold pony camps through the summer holidays where the children get the opportunity to have a pony to look after like their own, we also go for picnics to woods, hold shows and much much more.
