    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Your duties will include but not be limited to the following tasks:

  • Monitoring and maintaining health and safety
  • Maintain and develop personal performance
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
  • Preparing ground for seeding and planting
  • Establishing plants or seeds in soil
  • Maintain the health of sports turf
  • Maintain the condition of sports turf surfaces
  • Renovate and repair sports turf surfaces
  • Use and maintain non-powered and hand held powered tools and equipment
  • Use and maintain pedestrian controlled powered equipment.

Desired skills

The successful candidate must demonstrate a passion for outdoor horticultural sports surface operations in general. The successful candidate will understand the opportunity that this apprenticeship has for the development of a long term career as a specialist amenity horticulture apprentice within one of the largest facilities management companies in the UK.

Personal qualities

You should be prepared to work hard in a pressured environment. You must have good communication skills.
Ideally you will have some experience of a horticulture/landscaping/sports turf environment;. You should understand the importance of making the right impression at an interview. You will need to work well within a team environment.

Qualifications required

Minimum of 3 x GCSE’s at Grade C or above, including Maths and English, (or equivalent)
Proof of qualifications will be required before you can be accepted onto the apprenticeship.

Future prospects

Excellent prospects of a full time role with further development and training for the successful candidate that proves to be reliable hardworking and flexible.
Further training and development can be expected including certification of PA1, PA6 and Trailer Test.

Things to consider

This opportunity is predominantly for outdoor work so you can expect at times to be either hot cold or wet. You will be physically active most of the day. Consideration should be given to the physical nature of the role.

Training provider

Qualification: Level 2 Amenity Horticulture
College Attendance: there is no regular college attendance required as the qualification will be delivered almost entirely in the workplace.
Training for all job specific tasks will be given. In addition the apprentice will have the support and guidance of a qualified assessor from the college, who will make on-site visits every 6-8 weeks. There may be the occasional need to attend either the Otley or Easton campus for short training courses and tests.

Pay Rates: The current NMW rate for Apprentices is £3.50 per hour with effect from 1st April 2017. This applies to 16-18 year old Apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other Apprentices the Apprentice National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The wage for Apprentices applies to both time spent on the job plus time spent in training. Apprentices need to be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week in the industry with a contract of employment
