Tasks will include:

  • Generally assist the foreman as and when required
  • Barrow and spread soil and aggregates
  • Dig holes for posts and footings
  • Remove soil for hard core bases
  • Assist with planting and plant / tree care
  • Safe use of machinery, including a cement mixer, lawnmower, strimmer and hedge trimmer.
  • Safe and accurate use of various tools including a drill, spirit level, hand saw and set square.
  • Candidates will be expected to work in all weathers.

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

An interest in garden landscaping and plants is essential.

Personal qualities

Candidates will need to be able to manage their time and work under pressure. They will need to respond well to being given instructions and to use their initiative where neccessary.

Candidates will need to respectfully deal with clients on site and work well within a team.

Qualifications required

GCSE (or equivalent) English, Maths, and Science at grade D or above.

Future prospects

Future support will be given and a permanent role will be offered following successful completion of the course.

Things to consider

Location will vary around Basingstoke depending on where the work is. Please consider how you will get to work and around Basingstoke. The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year. Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year. The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over. Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).
