    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

From client consultations to colouring, the Hairdressing Apprenticeship covers all the basics of hairdressing and more. As an Apprentice, you’ll be working as a salon assistant, assisting senior staff while training as a assistant stylist. Duties are likely to include booking appointments, shampooing, conditioning, drying and styling hair, and mixing and applying hair colouring. You’ll spend a lot of time being active, and it’s important that you look smart (and have an even better hairstyle).

This Level 2 Hairdressing Apprenticeship will develop basic hairdressing skills by working and learning in a salon environment to develop the fundamental skills required to become a stylist.

Course Content:

This Apprenticeship includes the following elements

  • NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing level 2 (QCF)
  • Level 1 Functional Skill in Mathematics
  • Level 1 Functional Skill in English
  • Employer rights and responsibilities (work-book)

At Level 2, the Hairdressing Apprenticeship will develop your skills in a number of hairdressing techniques including how to shampoo the hair, styling hair, set and dress hair, cut hair, colour hair, advise and consult with clients, promote retail sales and many more. You will also develop skills in analysing numerical information and communication relevant to your job role plus develop an understanding of employment rights and responsibilities.

The National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is �3.40 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.
