As an apprentice HGV technician with Hampshire County Council you will be required to learn about mechanical, diagnostic and technical issues on a diverse range of vehicles.

Daily duties would include:

  • Working with an experienced technician
  • Learning how to diagnose faults and offering solutions
  • Preparing vehicles for MOT Assisting with a 69 point vehicle safety check that includes; brakes and emissions testing
  • 4 Year fixed term contract where you will achieve both level 2 and level 3 qualifications

Qualifications required

You should ideally have 5 GCSE A to C grade or equivalent, however, this is not essential as you will be assessed on Maths and English.

Future prospects

Progression to a level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship is included in this role.

Things to consider

The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year. Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year. The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over. Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).
