    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Your training will be a combination of in salon experience, specific theoretical/practical training sessions and project work.  Assessments will take place throughout your training programme to ensure that you pass all the relevant units.  The awarding body of your Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing is City & Guilds.

Please note that during your apprenticeship you will be expected to complete all elements of Hair Professional Apprenticeship Standards, including Level 2 Diploma, and any Functional skills tests required.

Highlighted below are a few of the subjects you will cover:

  • Perfect shampooing, blow drying and finishing hair with product
  • Learning how to style, dress and finish hair
  • Understanding head shape and bone structure
  • Learning how to conduct a successful client consultation 
  • Exploring good client care
  • Discovering the science of hair
  • Colouring techniques

After having gained experience in the above, education in these areas is continued.

The world renowned Sassoon classic precision cutting and colouring skills is then introduced.

You will then need to pass specific Sassoon assessments before qualifying to continue to work with us as a Hairdresser.

Qualifications required

GCSE grades C in English and Maths however we would consider any candidates who has received grades below C

Future prospects

Working as a part of Sassoon team. Representing company on many shows and hair expos. Working as a part of a team in Sassoon Academy or working as a teacher/assessor in one of our salons.

Things to consider

The National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for an apprentice which at the moment is £3.50 per an hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.
