    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage rates are £4.05 an hour for 16 - 17 year olds, £5.60 an hour for 18 - 20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship(usually one day per week).

  • Working week

    The employee’s normal hours of work are for 37.5 hours per week (averaged over the year) for 52 weeks per year. Monday- Friday, 6.5 to 8 hours per day. Times to be discussed at interview. 15 minute break in the morning and one hour unpaid lunch.

Ellesmere College in Shropshire are looking to recruit an Apprentice Groundsperson to assist the head groundsperson maintain the college sports pitches, golf course and grounds. This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone with a keen interest in horticulture and sportsturf.

Main responsibilities and tasks:

The following duties are examples of what the Apprentice Groundsperson may be required to undertake, however, this list is not exhaustive and a degree of flexibility is expected in the performance of these duties.

The duties include:

  • Maintenance of playing fields.
  • Maintenance of golf course.
  • Maintenance of all areas of the College grounds, including trees, borders, Head Teacher’s garden and all fencing.
  • Ensuring grounds, including all road and hard-standing areas are kept up to a high standard.
  • Ensure that Health & Safety standards are always met.
  • Other duties as directed by the Head Groundsperson or Deputy Groundsperson.

The ideal candidate would be local to the area, keen to learn, hardworking, reliable and have some interest or experience in horticulture.

You will work 37.5 hours per week between 8 am and 5 pm Monday to Friday with some occasional weekend work required. Times may vary depending on the season but this will be discussed at interview.

You will be paid the National Minimum Wage for your age. This will reviewed throughout the programme and may increase depending on performance and progression.

Qualifications required

Qualifications demonstrating sound literacy and numeracy skills (e.g. GCSE English and maths A*-C or equivalent qualifications) are desirable.

Please ensure you have listed all qualifications and grades/predicted grades in the appropriate section of this application, paying particular attention to English and Maths.

Candidates will be screened as part of the recruitment process and must be able to work at Level 1 in Functional Skills (Maths and English) in order to undertake this Apprenticeship.

Please note that candidates with any qualification at the same level or above in the same subject are ineligible for funding and will not be considered for an Apprenticeship.

Future prospects

Possibility to progress on to the Advanced Apprenticeship.

Training provider

Training will be provided in the workplace through Myerscough College where you will work towards a Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard – Horticulture Operative.

This qualification is suitable for anyone working in a horticulture/soft landscaping industry including the establishment and maintenance of plants and cultivated area and therefore focuses on plant propagation and plant growth.

The work is generally based outside and undertaken throughout the year, so apprentices will frequently work outside in all weathers. Often people new to the industry will start in a practical role covering a range of practical tasks, with specialist skills being learnt through progression.

A wide range of machinery and tools are used and additional training may be required depending on the nature of the works undertaken.

Working and learning in the horticulture industry is rewarding, offers a diverse range of employment opportunities and includes a range of skills that are transferrable into many other industries.
