    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

You will be working alongside experienced and qualified trades people, learning on a 1:1 basis. The majority of our projects are residential houses, which could be having extensions, renovations, walls knocked down.

Typical roles that you will be taught to do could include (depending on the project):

  • Measuring the work area and setting out the first rows of bricks (courses) and the damp course.
  • Mixing mortar by hand or with a mechanical mixer.
  • Laying bricks and applying the mortar with a trowel.
  • Shaping and trimming bricks using hammers, chisels and power tools.
  • Checking that courses are straight and true using an appropriate level.
  • Tidying up after completion of jobs.
  • Other ad-hoc duties as required.

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

We are looking for someone who has ideally done either a Level 1 or Level 2 construction/bricklaying based course and is looking to progress. Alternatively, someone who has a little experience in the construction trades and wants to progress.

However, we will consider all applicants provided they show the desire to work and develop in the construction industry.

Personal qualities

  • Someone with the desire and motivation to learn and work in the construction trade.
  • Someone interested in a variety of work tasks.
  • Motivated.
  • Self-starter - someone that wants to progress, thinks for themselves.
  • Use initiative, particularly around using Personal Protective Equipment and Health & Safety.

Qualifications required

Ideally GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Maths, grades A*-D.

For the right candidate, upon successful completion of the apprenticeship there is the potential of ongoing employment, development and progression with a fast moving forward thinking company.

Things to consider

The job does involve standing for the majority of the day and working in all weathers.
