We are looking for an apprentice groom to join our team to care for the riding school horses and liveries. The job will include helping with lessons, Pony Club and the day-to-day activities at the yard. Training will be provided in Horse Care, ridden work and for those interested in coaching there will be opportunities to assist with teaching.

    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

    5.5day week incl weekend day (45hours) Mon, Tues, Wed morning, Thurs, Fri and Sun – Typically 8am – 6pm (7:30am start on Sunday), also may be required to do a late finish on Tues/Thurs to cover evening lessons. 1 hour lunch break and 15min am

Groom Apprentice Position - Full Time

We currently have a position available for a Groom Apprentice at our riding school/livery yard just outside Ilminster.

We are looking for someone with experience of working with horses and ponies, who is happy to take part in all the day to day tasks required to run a busy yard. As we are a riding school and active pony club centre, good customer skills and an enjoyment of working with children is essential. A positive attitude and good team working skills is also a must! An interest in teaching riding would be looked upon favourably.

In return for your work, you will receive regular formal training from our qualified instructors and grooms in addition to gaining essential practical skills and experience. You will then be able to achieve formal Industry qualifications, under the guidance of our Apprenticeship provider.

This is a busy job, but we try to have fun and plenty of laughter, opportunity for lots of riding on safe, sensible horses, we also offer a staff livery package if you have your own horse.

5.5 day week including one weekend day. 
Salary - NMW for apprentices.

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

Some basic riding experience desirable but not essential. Basic horse handling skills required. Must be punctual and have good time keeping

Personal qualities

The right candidate will be well motivated and keen to learn. Must enjoy working with animals and people as this is a customer facing role.

Things to consider

There is the possibility of onsite accommodation. Also apprentices may bring own horse (@ staff livery rate) The job is 45 hours a week. 16-17 year olds can only work 40 hours a week, so weekly hours will be adjusted
