To learn testing of vehicle engine and components for durability, catalyst, fuel and lubes, calibration and performance projects following testing instructions issued by engineering team. Including engine rigging, fitting and testing and general engineering tasks in the workshop and on vehicles.

Key Accountabilities

  • To be trained in conducting tests on engines, vehicles or components in line with project requirements and ensure tests conform to customer instructions.
  • To comply with the relevant Health and Safety procedures.
  • Use of suitable hand and power tools for manual tasks.
  • Use of computer based testing systems.
  • Selection and execution of test and development activities, including reporting, to meet the objectives of the project.
  • Maintain effective links with the engineering team.
  • Provide adequate information to other test technicians and other personnel involved to ensure smooth shift handovers.
  • To ensure that the test meets the requirements of the engineering team
  • To assist in maintaining test bed files and completion of all relevant forms, data sheets and test bed logs. Assist in the resolution of Customer complaints, recommending & co-ordinating appropriate corrective & preventive management actions
  • To assist in the investigation and implementation of departmental efficiency improvements.
  • Identify and highlight quality problems and help to find solutions using accepted processes.
  • Ensure all test bed instrumentation used is calibrated.
  • To keep the test cell and control rooms kept clean and tidy.
  • Liaise with maintenance to ensure that any plant, equipment or instrumentation used on projects is fit for purpose.
  • To identify problems and faults as they arise and provide the initiative for solutions.
  • To carry out other tasks as reasonably requested

Our test facility operates 28 engine and driveline, powertrain test cells on a 24/7 basis on engines ranging from the smallest non-road engines up to the largest Heavy-Duty vehicle engines.Each test cell contains engine testing dynamometers featuring steady state and transient testing capabilities, for testing Diesel, Gasoline and any alternative fired or hybrid engines and driveline systems.As well as offering engine durability testing, we specialize in engine performance and emissions development and combustion mapping and we also have test cells dedicated to fuel and lubricant testing as well as exhaust system manufacture and catalyst aging.

The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year. Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year. The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over. Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).
