  • Answering the telephone

  • Sorting the mail
  • Scanning documents into patients records
  • Arranging transport requests
  • Accepting requests for repeat medication
  • Using IT systems such as SystmOne
  • Creating newsletters
  • Updating our social media sites
  • Participating in mandatory training such as Safeguarding, CPR
  • Working with the rest of the GP Practice team to ensure the smooth running of the practice

  • May have to work additional hours to cover sickness / absence of colleagues
  • Once trained, may have to open / close the building in the absence of the regular key holder

The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is 3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year. Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year. The minimum wage rates are 5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and 7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over. Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training thats part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Future prospects

Reception role or to Practice Management. Receptionists have also been trained up as Health Care Assistants within the practice, which is the first step towards a clinical role treating patients within GP Practice. There are also training and upskilling opportunities to expand your knowledge and skills to become care navigators.

Training provider

  • Induction into the role and the GP Practice
  • Training in the IT systems such as SystmOne
  • Mandatory training such as Safeguarding and CPR mostly via an online training provider
  • Working through your competency booklets to gain a knowledge and understanding of the role

Full on the job training to be provided and one day a week college attendance for underpinning knowledge. Candidate will work towards a full Level 2 apprenticeship in Business Admin functional skills and end-point assessment.
