    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

The ideal candidate must be hard working, trustworthy and be able to take responsibility of working with young children on a day to day basis.

Day to day tasks:

  • To assist in the implementation of the daily routine.
  • Providing food and drinks.
  • Assess children's development.
  • Carrying out creative activities.
  • Supervising sleep times.
  • To attend team meetings and contribute relevant ideas.
  • Under supervision to provide all aspects of care for children including washing, changing and feeding.

Access to the Internet is mandatory as all coursework is submitted to your assessor via an online electronic portfolio.

Future prospects

On completion of the Intermediate Apprenticeship, individuals will have the opportunity to apply to progress on to the Advanced Apprenticeship.

Training provider

Competency qualification: this qualification is delivered through practical and written assignments which are carried out in the workplace and apprentices will be required to produce work tasks and build an e-portfolio of evidence.

Knowledge:  this aspect of the course is delivered in the workplace.

  • Functional Skills at Level 1 in Maths, English and ICT delivered in the classroom.
  • Employment Rights & Responsibilities (ERR) are delivered via a workbook and completed in the workplace.
  • Personal Learning & Thinking Skills are embedded in the main qualification.
  • Paediatric First Aid delivered over two Saturdays in the classroom (12 hours duration).
