To learn the basic skills of assisting in running a horse yard, maintenance of fields, stables, horse care. Learning how to lead ponies/horses, in and out of stables and fields. Help with lead rein lessons, e.g assist in leasing a small pony. Willing to learn BHS methods of teaching and working towards a BHS instructor qualification.

    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

    Starting at 8am with 15 minute break in the morning, 1 hour lunch, 15 minute afternoon break finish at 5. Working Tuesday to Saturday.

Hay and check waters in field. Field management. Check herd for any issues and report to manager. Muck out all stables being used ….in summer most are out in the fields, in winter they stay in during the evenings so there are more stables to muck out in November-February dependent upon weather. Catching horses for lessons from field. Prepare horses grooming, hoof pick and tack up ready for lessons. Cleaning tack as and when required.  Hay nets, making up feeds. Yard duties are:  ensuing yard is kept clear of any muck etc sweeping through throughout the day.  In mornings if horses are in ensure you put fresh hay nets in and check the waters and top up or change water.  Keep school free of muck and keep tidy.  Time management is a must, ensure that lesson lists are checked and horses are tacked up ready, take into school and take out once lesson is completed.  Un tack put tack away, keep tack room tidy at all times. Take phone calls and ensure messages are passed onto staff accordingly. 

Must be confident around horses, riding ability intermediate level.  Excellent approach and manner towards customers.  Must have empathy towards children and adults with special needs.  Wanting to work towards BHS instructor qualifications during their time with us.

Training and support to become a qualified BHS Instructor alongside apprenticeship.

Things to consider

We are based just outside Long Crendon down a dead end road, no buses. Buses stop in the village centre approx.. 1 mile away. You will certainly need to be physical, being active for most of the day and it can be in very muddy conditions. Working outside in all weathers. Important Other Information Training on the Apprenticeships Programme for 16 to 18 year olds is a priority and fully-funded by Government. Training for Apprenticeships for those over this age is part funded, with employers expected to make a part or full contribution.
