    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

What you'll be doing

Protection Knowledge 
•Understanding of the Full Functionality of a Scheme 
•Familiarity with relays and configuration software 
•Understanding of Electrical Interlocking and its requirement 
•Knowledge of transformer protection 
•Knowledge of Busbar protection 
•Understand bus sections and couplings 

Primary Plant Knowledge 
•Knowledge of different plant and an appreciation for electrical clearances which make up the basis of an electrical layout. This will include gaining an understanding of civil and structural interfaces as well as the loading criteria’s which impact upon these. 
•Understand Mechanical interlocking systems 
•An understanding of OHL and Cabling interface 
•Understanding the requirements with regards to oil containment in relation to transformers

Safety Appreciation 
•An understanding of client safety rules and the need for safety adherence on site 
•Interact with the site management/supervision and safety advisors to understand fully substation risks 
•Creation of complete risk assessments and task briefing sheets and monitor the team’s documentation to be better familiar with our requirements under rules 

•Understand and appreciate why Record keeping is of vital importance to defending the interest of the Company.
•Understand and appreciate the correct Contractual methodology for record keeping and Notices associated with time (Delay), Change and other cost related issues

•Understand the C Appreciate the use of Programmes to demonstrate entitlement to additional time and costs.
•Contractual significance of programmes.
•Assist in the creation of Commissioning Programmes.

The successful candidate will hopefully secure a full-time position with Balfour Beatty at the end of their apprenticeship, dependent on business requirements.

L3 Engineering Technician

To undertake work based and academic learning to become a Commissioning Engineer at the end of the Training Period.

At completion you will have a full understanding and appreciation of the Commissioning Role and should be able to integrate these into their wider Engineering objectives and develop skills further to become a accomplished Commissioning Engineer. They will be able to guide the installation team and Project management team in delivering substation works from conception through to live connection to the network. 

The qualifications will be gained via internal training and external training through a local college.  The successful candidate will attend college on a day or block release basis, which will be decided with the line manager.
