    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Working alongside a team of busy stylists with very high standards, you will learn a huge range of hairdressing skills whilst also assisting in the salon with:-

  • Laundry & cleaning
  • Client  refreshments 
  • Client care.
  • Shampooing & Treatment application
  • Colour Application & removal

You will attend The Hair Academy in Ashford for 1 day a week whilst working in the salon for 4 days a week.

Desired skills

  • You need to be able to work in a team and be able to use your own initiative.
  • A salon can be a stressful and busy environment and you will need to be able to 'keep calm and carry on!' whilst attending to clients and assisting stylists.
  • A good attitude to theory and practical work is essential as homework will be required.

  • Friendly, sociable and caring.
  • Good at absorbing information from your surroundings.

Future prospects

The world of hairdressing can lead you on to many areas of life and once you have completed your Apprenticeship you may have the opportunity to go on to an Advanced Apprenticeship (L3) - this can lead on to Training, Salon Management, travel, theatre and TV or even eventually owning your own salon.

Things to consider

You will have to stand for long periods of time and work full time, so you need to be healthy and fit and able to concentrate whilst learning from everything that is going on around you.
