    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

    Monday to Friday - Mornings 7am-12pm Tuesday and Wednesday - Afternoons 5pm-8pm Times may vary depending on work load and will need to extend over the summer months to fit in with the work demands on the farm.

Apprentice herds person to work under the head herds person to help with milking and daily routine such as:

  • washing the parlour
  • feeding the cattle
  • tending to minor health care issues
  • small odd jobs like moving cattle
  • cleaning
  • general maintenance can be expected

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Some knowledge of cattle would be useful but not essential.
  • Must be confident working with large animals

Personal qualities

  • Friendly and able to work well with others

Qualifications required

  • GCSE Maths and English A-G (9-1) or equivalent

Future prospects

The applicant will gain knowledge from our expert herds person on the management of dairy cows and the general workings of a dairy farm.

Due to location own transport or a reliable lift is necessary.

About the employer

We are a dairy and arable farm with a herd of 400 pedigree dairy shorthorn cattle consisting of 130 milkers, beef bulls and young stock. We have 500 acres of crops and grassland.
