    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

You will work alongside the stylists in this very busy salon and assist them in their daily duties as well as assist with the general running of the salon.

You will attend the academy in Ashford 1 day a week and work in the salon for 4 days a week.

Qualifications required

None required as English & Maths will be taught as part of Apprenticeship if required - depending on GCSE grades.

Future prospects

Once you have completed your Apprenticeship you may be lucky enough to be asked to join the salon team as a graduate stylist. You may also be able to go on to complete your Advanced Apprenticeship or Barbering. A career in hairdressing can lead you on to many areas including - film & TV, travel, salon management or even to owning your own salon.

Things to consider

Hairdressing is very hard work as well as being able to stand for long periods and use your own initiative you will also need to be able to work as part of a team and under pressure. You will also need a good attitude to theory as well as practical work as homework will be expected. The Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage (ANMW): From April 2017 the ANMW was set at £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.
