    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

The successful apprentice at Allwood Installations will be expected to take on a varied amount of construction and carpentry, this will include carrying and lifting heavy objects and cutting precisely to bespoke orders.

Along with this, you will learn a mixture of first and second fix carpentry, you will be taught how to make stud walls, fix skirting and door frames, how to lay flooring and build staircases. Some levels of general construction will be expected such as painting and decorating, bricklaying and plastering.

You will be expected to be willing to learn and take direction well, you must have good attention to detail. You will learn other aspects of the building and construction trade to enhanced and develop your knowledge.

Desired skills

You will need to have excellent co-ordination and attention to detail. You must be able to take direction well and work to tight deadlines, working well within a close knit team is required at all times. You will need to be precise at all times and polite when working within clients homes.

Personal qualities

You must be friendly and polite at all times with good time keeping skills and work ethic. You will need to be hardworking and adaptable therefore your own transport is required.

Qualifications required

A good level of English and Maths is desired.

Future prospects

After completing your Level 2 apprenticeship you may have the opportunity to progress onto an advanced Level 3 carpentry qualification should you show the required skills and abilities.

About the employer

Allwood Installations is owned by Dean who works closely with another fully qualified carpenter. Together they undertake all levels of carpentry which includes extensions, loft conversations, stud walls and general build while specialising in both site and bench aspects. Past Apprentices Allwood has previously supported one apprentice with his Level 2 apprenticeship qualification, the company is now in a position to recruit an apprentice or potentially two to join their expanding team.

  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Wood Occupations – Site Carpentry
  • Level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English (Level 1)
  • Construction Skills Health, Safety and Environment test – CSCS Test
  • Emergency First Aid
  • Certified Health and Safety Course
  • Internet Safety / Safeguarding


Whilst at our training centre you will learn the skills and gain experience that will help you throughout your role. Part of your training will be knowledge and theory based, whilst the remainder will be practical.

As part of attending Skills Group for your apprenticeship we will also arrange for you to work towards achieving your CSCS on-line test giving you the opportunity to apply for your CSCS Card. This confirms that individuals working in the building environment have the necessary competence, to carry out site work with the employer.

In addition to your training, Skills Group will give you the opportunity to achieve your Emergency First Aid and Health and Safety certificates, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.
