  • Supervise the use of the swimming pool and the swimming pool facilities by all users.
  • Ensure that safety instructions are followed and that the site/equipment is not damaged.
  • Clean the swimming pool area, changing rooms and other areas in the centre throughout the shift.
  • Ensure that any hazards are removed or appropriately managed.
  • Set up session equipment as requested.
  • Ensure equipment is correctly stored after use.
  • Act as a point of contact for users/swimmers/visitors.
  • Carry out rescues/first aid (as required). Request emergency assistance and report any incidents.
  • Be available for and participate in staff training (especially obligatory training). This will be part of the staff monthly work schedule.
  • Be aware of the centres Health & Safety Policy.
  • In conjunction with all staff of the centre, support, promote and act within the sports centres Safeguarding Policy, with particular consideration given to the safety of pool users.
  • Any additional duties, as directed by the Centre/Duty Manager Activities, which are within the reasonable capability and responsibility of the Lifeguard.

NPLQ Course Prerequisites – all learners must meet the following criteria before starting the course:

  • Be 16+ years of age on the date of assessment
  • Be able to jump/dive into deep water
  • Swim 50 metres in no more than 60 seconds
  • Swim 100 metres continuously on front and back
  • In deep water, tread water for 30 seconds
  • Surface dive to the floor of the pool
  • Climb out of the pool unaided without using a ladder/steps where the pool design permits.
