    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Job Summary: To carry out technician duties in College (in a workshop and classroom setting if required) in compliance with industry requirements and awarding body standards.  

To maintain the engineering workshops (predominantly electrical) including maintenance of equipment and procurement of resources, as well as supporting the lecturer or trainer assessor in regards to health and safety requirements.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Support the delivery of workshop and classroom sessions by liaising with teaching staff.
  • To organise and run the workshop stores and to support students requiring materials.
  • To ensure that resources are kept stocked and maintain the stores.
  • To maintain tools and equipment.
  • To aid the teaching staff in setting up and dismantling assessments.
  • To use the college procurement system to order materials and stock as required. Comply with all College quality systems and awarding body procedures necessary. 
  • To undertake additional duties that may be required commensurate with the level of responsibility of the post.

Future prospects

On completion of the Intermediate Apprenticeship, individuals will have the opportunity to apply to progress on to an Advanced Apprenticeship and subsequently onto a relevant Higher Education (HE) qualification and / or promotion within the workplace.

  • Competency based qualification - The NVQ is delivered through practical and written assignments which are carried out in college or sometimes in the workplace and apprentices will be required to produce work tasks and build a portfolio of evidence.
  • Knowledge qualification - College based Technical Certificate delivered on a day release basis.
  • Functional Skills  Level 1 in Maths and English delivered in the classroom.
  • Employment Rights & Responsibilities (ERR) and Personal Learning & Thinking Skills (PLTS) - are delivered alongside the competency qualification via workbooks.
