    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Lowmoor Nursing Home based in Kirkby-in-Ashfield is looking to recruit a kind and compassionate apprentice to join their friendly team.
If you are passionate about working with the elderly, providing outstanding care with a particular emphasis on the psychiatry of mental health, then this is a fantastic opportunity for you to gain invaluable and transferable skills to progress your career within the health and care sector.

Working closely with the care team the role will include undertaking a variety of tasks including:

  • Assist residents in areas of personal care including with bathing particularly with less mobile residents
  • Take care of clothing and personal belongings
  • Offering and making drinks for residents
  • Taking residents to toilet if require help
  • Talking to residents
  • Planning and doing activities with residents, getting each one involved
  • Help serve meals and drinks and where required feeding the residents
  • Move, dress and assist residents with their daily hygiene routine
  • Escorting residents to appointments
  • Showering, dressing and bath bathing when required
  • Changing beds
  • Answering call bells

Your role will be to make the residents as comfortable as possible, the employer would like you to bring 'new ideas to the table' on how to keep residents occupied.

Family and friends are very important to the residents and you will need to embrace their presence whilst maintaining confidentiality.

*This apprenticeship is work based learning therefore most of the time you will be working at the employer's address. You will need to attend college in Basford, Nottingham for initial assessments and a 1 day a month.

Personal qualities

  • Will be friendly, be able to demonstrate team working skills, be patient and able to multitask at busy times whilst staying calm under pressure.

Qualifications required

  • A*-C English and Maths or equivalent desirable but not essential.
  • The candidate will be required to meet minimum levels of Maths and English for acceptance onto the apprenticeship training programme.

Candidate may be asked to complete a DBS (CRB) check before being offered employment due to working with vulnerable adults Candidate must be available to start as soon as possible. Candidate must be able to travel to the workplace according to working hours. Please be aware this role includes shift work, working bank holidays and weekends.

About the employer

Lowmoor Nursing Home is a privately managed home specially designed, tastefully decorated and has a very committed workforce, showing very little staff turnover over 20 years of business. Lowmoor also has a male unit (The Oaks Unit) for those clients with dementia related "difficult to manage" behaviours. The female only unit called “Cedars” next door is for challenging behaviour service users and there is a mixed gender unit downstairs for clients with dementia who also have heavier physical support needs. The home enjoys credibility with the local psycho geriatric services and is praised for its excellent record on management. Therapeutic activities are managed by the activities coordinator who is a qualified general Nurse(RGN). The home enjoys quality rating band 4 and accreditation of gold standards framework care home foundation level. It has excellent working relationships with local PCTs, Social Services of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, and Leicestershire.
