    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

A fantastic opportunity for any candidate with a passion to pursue a career in accounting with a particular emphasis in public finance. Shadowing the employer 121 the candidate will start carrying out basic accounting functions such as:

  • Processing invoices for payment on the financial system and obtaining authorisation for payment.
  • Preparing supplier details to enable new suppliers to be added to the financial system.
  • Processing payments by cheque or BACS (Bankers Automated Clearing System) to suppliers and employees, including preparation of data for the BACS run.
  • Processing urgent payments by CHAPS (electronic, same day payment system) in respect of retirement lump sums and pay arrears.
  • Processing Petty Cash returns. Management of Headquarters' petty cash, including checking that amounts claimed are within approved limits, recording details of expenditure, reimbursing cash to employees, reconciling records to cash and requesting reimbursement of cash from the bank.
  • Maintaining and reconciling control accounts relating to employee deductions from salary.
  • Handling arrangements for the payover of deductions to appropriate bodies and provision of supplementary information.
  • Checking and processing of travel and other expense claims from employees in the financial system.
  • Responding to queries from employees about their travel and subsistence claims and entitlements thereof.
  • Carrying out independent rolling and year end stock taking within the Supplies Department.
  • Collection of income from various sources, both cash and cheques.
  • Preparing cash for banking and paying cash into the bank branch.
  • Allocating income collected to financial system codes by way of journal transfer.
  • Reconciling income collected to the general ledger.
  • Allocating miscellaneous items of income and expenditure from the bank statement to appropriate codes in the financial system. This may require service-wide investigations in respect of unidentified income.
  • Arranging travel e.g: air, rail and accommodation on behalf of the Finance Department and other Headquarters personnel without an administrator.
  • Checking the bank balance electronically on a daily basis.
  • Managing the stationery requirements of the Finance Department, including placing orders and managing the stationery stock.
  • Covering for the absence of the Finance Assistant (Sales Ledger) by producing sales ledger invoices on behalf of other departments.

General responsibilities:

  • You must co-operate with Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue's attempts to comply with health and safety legislation. Where appropriate you must safeguard the health and safety of all persons affected by the work activities you supervise at any premises you have control over.
  • You must work in a safe manner in which you have been trained and instructed and advise your line manager of any health and safety problems you become aware of.
  • You should familiarise yourself with the contents of the Brigade's Written Safety Policy.
  • To take proper care in handling, operation and safeguarding of any equipment, vehicles or appliance, used or issued by the Service or provided or issued by a third party for individual or collective use in the performance of the postholder's duties.
  • To uphold the Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service's Fairness at Work and Equal Opportunities policies and practices.
  • To promote and deliver fair and quality services that are sensitive and responsive to all service users.
  • Where appropriate you will work with computer and new technologies and associated systems as required. Compliance with computer security measures to protect against unauthorized access to, alteration or disclosure.
  • Any other duties which may reasonably be regarded as within the nature of the duties, responsibilities and grades of the post as defined, subject to the proviso that normally any significant changes of a permanent nature should be incorporated into the job description in specific terms.

The current National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged over 18 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training. * Please note that anyone under the age of 18 will only work a maximum of 40 hours per week. Any role which exceeds these hours on advert will be amended accordingly to fall in line with the legislation. * * Please note if the successful applicant is found prior to the closing date the vacancy maybe withdrawn early.* This apprenticeship is work based learning therefore most of the time you will be working at the employers address.
