    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

    Your working hours will be Monday to Friday, 08.00 to 17.00. There may be times where you will be required to work additional hours.

You will be required to carry out duties such as building and repairing walls in accordance with construction plans. You will also be taught how to lay out structural frameworks for buildings using bricks and mortar.

The successful apprentice will be shown how to use specialist tools and equipment from operating a cement mixer to preparing mortar to cutting and shaping bricks to fit corners. The apprentice will learn to use plumb lines and spirit levels to check that the bricks are aligned correctly. During your working day you will be using a range of other specialist tools ranging from hammers and trowels to state-of-the-art power tools.

You will be supervised by a fully qualified member of staff, and you must follow health and safety procedures in the workplace at all times, as well as ensuring that all tools are clean and put away correctly. You will be required to wear the correct personal protective equipment at all times both when working with the employer, and whilst attending our Skills Group training centre.

You must be able to work within a team, be confident enough to ask the employer questions, for help and assistance and get on with people of all ages.

For this apprenticeship you must be punctual, diligent and physically active as it can be a labour intense job role. You will be responsible for lifting and carrying blocks that are going to be used for the day so you must be physically strenuous.

Personal qualities

An honest, trustworthy and committed individual is required for this role.

Qualifications required

A basic knowledge in English and Maths is required for this position. GCSE grades of A-E or equivalent are acceptable.

Future prospects

On completion of your level 2 apprenticeship you will progress onto the level 3 qualification.

PJB Bricklaying is a small, friendly, locally based business. They are committed to providing a professional service, and pride themselves on the quality of their workmanship. No job is too big or too small from garden walls to new builds. The employer is based in Eggbuckland, Plymouth so you will need to get to this location or near, for pick up each morning. Past Apprentices The firm have been running for many years now and have previously recruited 3 apprentices, of which 2 are qualified up to level 3 standard. PJB Bricklaying are keen to take someone on through Skills Group who can grow within the business and receive first class training from the employer and Skills Group.

Training provider

The Apprenticeship in Trowel Occupations consists of:

  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Trowel Occupations
  • Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English (Level 1)
  • Construction Skills Health, Safety and Environment test – CSCS Test
  • Emergency First Aid
  • Certified Health and Safety Course
  • Internet Safety / Safeguarding

As part of the apprenticeship programme, attendance is required at our Skills Group training centre for one day per week. All other aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site by the employer. You will have regular visits every six to eight weeks from your designated Skills Group assessor, who will monitor your progress during your apprenticeship training.

Whilst at the Skills Group training centre, you will learn the necessary skills and gain experience to help you throughout your role. Part of your training will be knowledge and theory based, whilst the rest will be practical. You will develop your hand skills, carry out brick and block work, learn the correct use of specific tools, carry out pointing and learn mortar ratio mixes under the guidance of your assessor. Learning all these additional skills will benefit you on returning to the employer.

As an additional qualification you will also achieve your Emergency First Aid and certified Health and Safety Certificates, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.

As part of your apprenticeship Skills Group will also support you to complete your online CSCS test, which will enable you to apply for your CSCS Card. This shows that you are at the required competent level to carry out site work with the employer.
