    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Successful candidates will provide clinical support to dentists, hygienists and patients. You will also assist with reception or any clerical duties as required and perform such other tasks as reasonably requested by the principal.

Working as part of a professional team duties will include:

  • Making appointments for patients/ updating their records
  • Assisting the dentist chair-side with aspirating, fillings and extractions.
  • Assist with reception duties and perform other clerical duties if required
  • Shadowing dental staff during general procedures (examinations, X-rays etc)

They may include a range of higher education qualifications or other work-related education and training to support continuing profession development such as Certificate in Dental Sedation Nursing, Certificate in Oral Health Education etc.

Training provider

Competency qualification: Apprentices will be required to produce work and build an e-portfolio of evidence through blended learning which will include practical and written knowledge assessments which are carried out in the workplace.

Knowledge: Underpinning knowledge will involve attending the classroom for 4 short exams which takes 40 minutes each ( the exams will not be taken at the same time) , and a programme of e-learning (any exam revision required will be undertaken in the classroom)
Functional Skills at level 2 in Maths and English: Functional Skills (projects and tests) will be taught in the classroom for a period of 15 weeks (half a day per functional skill)

Extended award in Employment and Personal skills (a combination of Employment Rights & Responsibilities and Personal Learning & Thinking Skills) will be delivered by e-learning, research and the completion of a workbook and assignment.
