    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

    To begin with you will be working in salon for 3 days a week and attend the academy for 1 day a week - this will increase to a full time role of 5 days a week in the next few months.

Whilst learning the skills of hairdressing & barbering both in salon and in the Hair Academy you will also be required to assist the stylists in the salon with their clients as well as help with the smooth running of the salon.

Desired skills

No hairdressing skills are required before you start an Apprenticeship but we would expect you to be able to work with  all ages and present yourself in a good manner to clients & the team.

Personal qualities

  • You will need to be able to work under pressure and as part of a team whilst also being able to use your own initiative.
  • A sense of fashion is important.
  • A friendly & caring nature as you will be dealing with the public.

Future prospects

Once you have completed your L2 Apprenticeship you may be offered a position as a graduate stylist in the salon and go on to do your Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship. The world of hairdressing can lead on to many areas including travel, management, teaching, sales, tv & film or even owning your own salon.

Things to consider

Hairdressing is very hard work and you will need to have good stamina as there is a lot of standing. Whilst you are learning the practical side of hairdressing there is also a lot of theory to learn and a good attitude to homework is essential. The Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage (ANMW): From April 2017 the ANMW was set at £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.
