    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

  • Working week

    30-40 hours. Shift work. We serve meals throughout the day including breakfast. We are open 7 days per week including bank holidays. Hours will vary slightly dependent on business needs. Wage will increase as your skills develop.

Working within a busy restaurant and bar as part of a team you will get involved with all duties. We are a hotel, bar & restaurant; as such we serve meals throughout the day.

  • Taking bookings for the restaurant/hotel
  • Welcoming guests
  • Managing seating in the restaurant
  • Serving food/drinks
  • Keeping the front of house tidy
  • Cashing up
  • Ordering stock
  • Communicating with the kitchen staff to ensure food is prepared timely
  • Managing the front of house environment to ensure visitors enjoy their time at the Charles Cotton
  • Any other duties as befits your role within the business  

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • You should have a passion for the industry and an aptitude for excellent customer service.
  • No formal skills are required.  

Personal qualities

  • Friendly, a team player, the ability to listen to your peers, organised and reliable.

Qualifications required

  • You should have a good standard of Maths & English; Ideally GCSE (or equivalent) C/4 or above

Future prospects

There is every chance of permanent employment on completion of the apprenticeship

Things to consider

Although there is a regular bus service to Hartington please consider how you will get to work each day. You will be working in a front of house role which will involve conversing with the general public, you should be confident in speaking to people. Your hours will involve shift work including early mornings, evenings, weekends and bank holidays – please consider this before you apply.

The Charles Cotton Hotel, Restaurant & Bar is located in the picturesque village of Hartington within the Peak District National Park. We have 17 bedrooms some of which are dog friendly. Our restaurant & bar is often a port of call for fishermen, walkers, and visitors to the village. We are a perfect location for functions such as small weddings, parties and a break away. The Charles Cotton dates from the early 17th Century, the interior reflects the legacy of Charles Cotton himself and he would have approved of the fine artistry depicting his beloved Derbyshire home.
