    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

To provide support to and work with colleagues to deliver legal services to the firm’s clients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Providing support to fee earners and other support staff in the firm to enable them to do their work effectively and efficiently; (note: a “fee-earner” is a solicitor or other legally qualified person who carries out work for clients; support staff include secretaries and administrative assistants)
  • Maintaining confidentiality in relation to all clients and their affairs and the firm’s business; this is of paramount importance;
  • Promoting a positive image of the firm in undertaking the various tasks which are entrusted to you; this includes, for example, being polite and pleasant and presenting a professional and business like appearance at all times when speaking with clients and other third parties.

Tasks:

  • Word processing letters and simple legal documents and preparing e-mails as requested; instructions; this will involve audio typing and copy typing; you will be expected to demonstrate continuous improvement in relation to this;
  • Binding legal documents for signature for clients and others;
  • Witnessing signatures to legal documents;
  • Providing assistance in archiving deeds and documents and files; this involves checking documents and files carefully, scheduling them accurately, inputting into the archiving system accurate details of deeds, documents and files to create a proper record, placing documents and files carefully in the archive, so that they can be retrieved when necessary
  • Filing correspondence and documents on files in chronological and otherwise proper order; assisting in the maintenance of filing systems
  • Receiving and screening incoming telephone calls when required, dealing with the call in an appropriate manner, directing calls to the appropriate work colleagues and/or taking and recording messages accurately and communicating these to the appropriate colleague in a timely manner;
  • Checking fee earner diaries on a regular basis and booking meeting rooms for appointments and communicating details of the arrangements made to the appropriate fee-earner;
  • Receiving (i.e. meeting and greeting) clients and others at the office, showing them to the appropriate meeting room and offering refreshments;
  • Inputting client and other third party data into the firm’s computerised record system accurately to ensure that records are accurate and up to date; this must be done in accordance with thr firm’s data protection policy
  • Collating the outgoing post and preparing this for posting as appropriate.

Future prospects

Full training will be given in this challenging and varied role to ensure that the apprentice has the skills and expertise to become a permanent member of the DRA Solicitors team.

Things to consider

The National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices will be £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.

Training provider

Intermediate Apprenticeship in Business and Administration.

This apprenticeship is delivered through work based learning, this means that all training is done at the workplace eliminating the need to attend college. The successful candidate will be allocated an assessor who will visit on site every 4-6 weeks and deliver all of the training to gain the qualification and provide the resources to complete work between visits.
