The apprentice will work alongside garden designer/owner learning all aspects of maintenance of a large garden open to the public including operating machinery such as hedgetrimmers, hayters, strimmers, tractor and trailer.
Maintenance of woodland gardens, main beds, gravel garden, vegetable garden and water gardens included, as well growing nursery stock in polytunnels.

Qualifications required

Minimum of 4 x GCSE's at Grades A-E (or equivalent) including Maths and English.
Character and desire to work is considered more important than any academic qualifications, although a good degree of common sense is required.
Proof of qualification will be required before you can be accepted onto the apprenticeship programme.

Future prospects

Full time position as gardener at Green Island Gardens on successful completion of the apprenticeship.

About the employer

The employer is the owner/manager of Green Island Gardens - Fiona Edmond. Fiona does all the office work and lawn mowing, and is hands on in the garden and nursery. The apprentice would work alongside Fiona as well as the rest of the team.

Training provider

Qualification: Level 2 Horticulture
College Attendance: There is no regular college attendance as the qualification is delivered almost entirely in the workplace.
Training for all job specific tasks will be given. In addition the apprentice will have the support and guidance of a qualified assessor from the college, who will make on-site visits every 6-8 weeks. There may be the occasional need to attend either the Otley or Easton campus for short training courses and tests.

Pay Rates: The current NMW rate for Apprentices is £3.50 per hour effective from 1st April 2017. This applies to 16-18 year old Apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other Apprentices the Apprentice National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The wage for Apprentices applies to both time spent on the job plus time spent in training. Working Week: Seasonal - Winter 30 hrs per week 9.15am-4pm, Monday-Friday. Summer 40 hrs per week, 8.30am-5pm, 5 days on a rota including Saturdays.
You may be required to help out serving the public at the gate, in the tearoom or nursery.
