As a Nursery Apprentice, you will spend your days learning how to look after children from 3 months old, right up to pre-school age. You’ll ensure that the children have fun whilst being sensitive and attentive to their individual needs.

Additionally, you will receive high quality training ‘on the job’ and ‘off the job’ (study time) linking theory to your practice, as you work towards your childcare apprenticeship framework that includes functional skills Maths, English and ICT as continue on your career in the Early Years sector.

Daily tasks will include:

  • Working together with the rest of the team to provide high quality care for children aged 0-5.
  • Ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of the nursery by adhering to the relevant policies and procedures.
  • Expanding your knowledge, gaining experience and using your imagination to come up with new ideas and activities.
  • Building relationships with children and communicating well with their parents.

None. A basic skill check in English, Maths, and ICT will be undertaken during the interview process.

Future prospects

As the training involves using an online portfolio and teaching resources, access to a computer is essential.

Things to consider

The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year. Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year. The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over. Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).
