    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

The duties and responsibilities involved in this role include:


Supporting the dentist in all aspects of patient care, this includes getting the appropriate instruments ready, mixing materials, cleaning and sterilising all instruments, developing x-rays and filing appropriately, maintaining cleanliness of all filters/ suction / hand piece turbines, preparing impressions for dispatch to the laboratory and ensuring patient comfort and confidentiality at all times.

You may also help with reception work - making appointments, taking payments, dealing with paperwork and meeting and reassuring patients.

They may include a range of higher education qualifications or other work-related education and training to support continuing profession development such as Certificate in Dental Sedation Nursing, Certificate in Oral Health Education etc.

About the employer

The practice has recently been refurbished with a view to meeting the requirements of the Care Quality Commission. This has included the provision of a dedicated decontamination facility. This decontamination facility has been designed to meet the full requirements of decontamination directive HTM-0105. It includes full instrument tracking software and hardware located in both the decontamination facility and the surgeries. An instrument washer disinfector, vacuum autoclave and hand piece cleaner autoclave with extensive instrument storage facilities. This level of equipment provision is similar to that found in many hospitals.

Competency qualification: Apprentices will be required to produce work and build an e-portfolio of evidence through blended learning which will include practical and written knowledge assessments which are carried out in the workplace.   
Knowledge:  Underpinning knowledge (Exam) will involve attending the classroom for a two hour exam and a programme of e-learning (any exam revision required will be undertaken in the classroom) 
Functional Skills at level 2 in Maths and English:  Functional Skills (projects and tests) will be taught in the classroom for a period of 15 weeks (half a day per functional skill)
Extended award in Employment and Personal skills (a combination of Employment Rights & Responsibilities and Personal Learning & Thinking Skills) will be delivered by  e-learning, research and the completion of a workbook and assignment.
