    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

This is a Level 2 Agriculture Apprenticeship is will be suited to someone who is adaptable and versitile as they will be involved in all aspects of the farming industry.

Typical duties will include:

  • Handling livestock
  • Driving tractors
  • Scraping up and preparing the milking parlor
  • Preparing feed
  • Roll silage fields
  • Assist with vet visits
  • Check and examine livestock for diseases
  • Feed calves
  • Foot trimming 
  • Using quad bikes (once trained)
  • Maintenance of fencing

This position would suit someone who is of a calm nature due to working with the animals.

No prior experience is necessary as full training will be given although any experience is an advantage. The successful applicant must demonstrate passion for the industry.

Qualifications required

2 GCSEs at grade D or above (or equivalent) are essential – however, applicants with relevant prior experience but without the stated qualifications will be considered and must be prepared to work towards a level 1 functional skills qualification in English and Maths.

On the successful completion of the apprenticeship full time employment will be available.

Things to consider

This position is available for an immediate start. The vacancy may therefore close swiftly IF a suitable candidate is found. All published dates can therefore be flexible and will be dependent on suitable candidates coming forward and registering appropriate interest. You must ensure that you have suitable travel arrangements to get to and from work and college. Public transport is available. From 1st of April 2017 the National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 or over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. Those between the ages of 19-24 who are in their second year (or third year) need to be paid the National Minimum Wage for their age bracket. In April 2016 the new National Living Wage was implemented and therefore if you are over the age of 25 and in your second or third year of an Apprenticeship you will be entitled to be paid the National Living Wage. About the employer

Bowgyheere Farm is small dairy farm run by father and son. They use traditional farming methods, but also have an up to date milking parlor that is fully automated. The team consists of contracted part time workers plus father and son. They are now looking to expand the business and increase the heard which is why they are now offering the apprentice position.

Training provider

You will be trained in the workplace alongside your usual duties and you will be expected to attend college one day a week or on a block release basis.  

You will work towards achieving a level 2 apprenticeship in Agriculture ncluding work based and knowledge components, an employee rights and responsibilities qualification, Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) and if required Functional Skills.
