    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an Apprentice to work within a very busy dental practice, based in Lichfield.

The successful candidate will play an important team role in the day to day smooth running of the practice.

Duties to include:

  • Assisting the dentist at chair-side
  • Using specialist dental software
  • Reception duties
  • Decontamination duties
  • Taking telephone calls
  • Booking appointments
  • Offering assistance to patients
  • Clinical and general cleaning within the practice

The hours for this apprenticeship will be discussed at interview but will be a minimum of 30 hours a week.

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

Candidates must be well organised. Attention to detail is key. Candidates must be computer literate and have experience of using Microsoft packages. The successful candidate will be a team player who is able to work well under pressure.

Personal qualities

Candidates must show enthusiasm and commitment, be willing to learn and have a positive, flexible attitude with the ability to carry out a variety of duties. Candidates must be motivated and able to show a good standard of self-discipline. Candidates must also be focused on Customer Service and strive to deliver high standards of Customer Service, always looking for ways to improve. Must be outgoing and able to communicate well on the telephone. You will also need the desire to progress to Dental Nurse within the practice.

Qualifications required

A*-C in Maths and English or equivalent qualifications are essential

Things to consider

Successful candidates will be expected to be willing to keep up to date inoculations such as Hepatitis B, Tuberculosis and normal childhood vaccinations. As a Dental Nurse, you may be exposed to strong odours associated with poor dental hygiene and you may also face vomit. It is a requirement that you have had your childhood vaccinations and potentially undertake an additional series of inoculations to protect yourself and patients. From 1st of April 2017 the National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 or over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. Those between the ages of 19-24 who are in their second year (or third year) need to be paid the National Minimum Wage for their age bracket. In April 2016 the new National Living Wage was implemented and therefore if you are over the age of 25 and in your second or third year of an Apprenticeship you will be entitled to be paid the National Living Wage.
