An exciting opportunity to work in a well-established Print Finishing department within an award winning print company

You will learn whilst working and achieve a qualification in Print Finishing.  An apprenticeship is a great place to start your career, as five of the current Management team were formerly trained as Apprentices with many more holding senior operator roles throughout the business.

Duties can include but are not limited to:

  • Maintain print equipment in working order
  • Learn the following print finishing techniques; Perfect Binding, PUR Binding, Sewn Binding, Saddle Stitching, Drilling (5 different drilling systems!!) Loose-Leaf, Wire-O, Side-Stabbed, Cased, Padding, Banding, Shrink-wrapping, Boxing.
  • Plan work to meet production requirements
  • Understand the Print Industry
  • Promote and maintain Health and Safety in a print related environment
  • Should be able to document training provided and maintain a log.
  • Should be able to maintain effective contacts within the Company.

 


Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Experience or an interest in working with machines.
  • Must have working knowledge of computers.
  • Should be able to document training provided and maintain a log.
  • Should be able to maintain effective contacts within the Company – Bindery; Prepress; Despatch; Account Managers; Warehouse: and other internal contacts.
  • Should be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of various printing techniques including lithographic and digital printing.

Personal qualities

  • The Apprentice should have the ability to work alone, but also to operate within a team environment.
  • Must have a working knowledge of computers.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Problem solving abilities.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Should be detail conscious and able to use initiative to ensure quality and specification conformance.
  • Flexible approach (job activities will change from time to time).
  • To be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of various printing techniques including lithographic and digital printing would be advantageous.

Qualifications required

  • 4 GCSE’s at Grade C or or equivalent to include English and Mathematics.

Future prospects

At the successful completion of the Apprenticeship it is anticipated that the Apprentice will be offered a position within the Company.

Things to consider

The Apprentice will undertake a relevant NVQ Level 3 qualification in Print Finishing. This training will take place both on, and off the job. Off the job training will normally take place at the premises of the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF) situated in London, and other locations as specified. The Apprentice will be assigned a course Tutor, who will provide assistance and guidance throughout the duration of the Apprenticeship. This job is manufacturing based and will include shift working. There will be some lifting and carrying associated with the role. Vacancy will close early if the right candidate is found - apply early to avoid disappointment. Please note you may be contacted via e-mail for interview. From April 1st the National Minimum Wage (NMW) for Apprentices is £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old Apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other Apprentices the National Minimum Wage appropriate to their age applies. The wage for Apprentices applies to both time spent on the job plus time spent training.
