Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

No specific skills required just a willingness to learn.

Personal qualities

Aged 16 – 36 (Must attest before 36th birthday). This is a legal requirement for this role within the RAF.

Qualifications required

You must have or gain Functional Skills (FS) qualifications in English and Mathematics during initial RAF training. As a RAF Regiment Gunner you will undertake and have to pass these FS tests as part of your combined Gunner basic recruit and trade training course. Even if you have other qualifications in Mathematics and English (like GCSE/SCEs), you will still have to take and pass the FS Mathematics and English tests.

Future prospects

You gain the apprenticeship as part of phase two (trade) training for the role, meaning you have a guaranteed job the moment you complete it.

There are a wide range of jobs available to an RAF Regiment Gunner including Forward Air Controller; Parachutist; Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defence Specialist, Force Protection Instructor; and Ceremonial Duties. Whatever your role, you will regularly deploy on overseas operations and exercises around the globe.

As your career progresses, we will continue to train you in new skills, particularly different weapon systems. There are opportunities to learn specialist combat medical skills, undertake management and leadership training and complete GCSEs, A-levels and more advanced NVQs. In addition, you will have the chance to gain qualifications in adventurous sports such as mountaineering, rock climbing, skiing, sailing and canoeing and for you to lead training as an Enhanced Team Leader.

Things to consider

To join the RAF you will also need to meet fitness, health, nationality, residency, and other criteria detailed on the RAF Recruitment website. The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year. Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year. The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over. Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).
