    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage rates are £4.05 an hour for 16 - 17 year olds, £5.60 an hour for 18 - 20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship(usually one day per week).

The role concentrates on the installation of domestic boilers within the Torbay and the surrounding areas. The minimum qualification requirement is NVQ Level 2.

As a plumbing apprentice, you’ll learn about the installation and maintenance of plumbing systems and components. You be working under minimal supervision to complete the installation and maintenance of domestic hot water, cold water, sanitation, drainage, rainwater systems, central heating systems and components.

On the advanced level apprenticeship, your skill base will broaden and you’ll be able to enter the profession at a higher level. For example you will able to complete and oversee work to install, service, maintain and commission;

Duties will include:

  • Domestic hot water, cold water, central heating and sanitation systems
  • Domestic plumbing and heating systems, components and gas-fired warm air appliances
  • Domestic plumbing and heating systems, components and gas-fired water and central heating appliances 

You will have to attend the PGL Training centre one day a week for Training.

Qualifications required

Applicants must have a Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plumbing. 

Future prospects

After completing your Apprenticeship there may be the chance of full time employment for the right person.

Things to consider

You may need to work on certain weekends. The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year. Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year. The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over. Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

From those humble beginnings South West Plumbing now operates from a prominent office location in Torquay with a fleet of 9 vans, an operating staff of 14 people and a large client base across Torbay, Teignbridge and the South Hams.
