    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage rates are £4.05 an hour for 16 - 17 year olds, £5.60 an hour for 18 - 20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship(usually one day per week).

As a full time mobile field engineer the role will predominantly be focussed on the repair, maintenance and installation of refrigeration equipment within a commercial kitchen. Duties include travel to client’s premises, fault diagnostics and successful repair of everything from upright refrigeration units to large heat pumps on commercial dishwashers. The successful candidate should be prepared to work occasional overtime and hold a full UK driving license. The ideal candidate will also be willing to learn and take on new skills and responsibilities to facilitate their progression.

Qualifications required


3 GCSE’s at Grade D or higher including English and Maths or have achieved a relevant Level 1 or Level 2 Vocational qualification or have relevant experience and be able to demonstrate ability equivalent to, or exceeding Level 1 in English and Maths.


Successful completion of the Intermediate Apprenticeship in Refrigeration or Air Conditioning or have a Level 2 NVQ or NVQ Diploma in a Refrigeration or Air Conditioning discipline and be able to demonstrate ability equivalent to, or exceeding Level 2 in English and Maths

Future prospects

Ultimately the job will involve travelling from job to job, often as a solo worker.

Training provider

The Intermediate Apprenticeship in Refrigeration or Air Conditioning is ideal for those who have an aptitude for technical subjects, are practically minded, have an interest in technology and are seeking to start a career as a refrigeration or air conditioning engineer. It is also suitable for those who have relevant experience but do not have a relevant refrigeration or air conditioning qualification.

You will learn through a combination of on- and off-the-job training. You will attend college one day per week during term time and spend the rest of your time earning and learning in the workplace. You will be assessed on a continuous basis through a combination of knowledge and practical assessment activities, including assessment of activities in the workplace.

The Apprenticeship has a minimum duration of 24 months unless you are aged 19 or older and have undertaken relevant prior learning

Your progress will be continuously monitored and supported by an Apprenticeship Achievement Officer.
