    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Have you always wanted to be a qualified Body Repair Technician?

There is an exciting opportunity for an apprentice to work alongside qualified technicians where you will be trained in all aspects of body repair.

A Body Repair Technicians will learn about all aspects of repair including:

  • Inspection and damage assessment
  • Estimating on cost of repair
  • Stripping down vehicles
  • Panel repair and preparation
  • Rebuilding vehicles and quality control

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

The ideal candidate must have a keen interest and a strong passion for the motor vehicle industry. Some previous work experience would be an advantage, however it is not essential.

You will need to demonstrate:

  • Excellent practical skills
  • The ability to work quickly and pay attention to detail

Good communication skills           

  • The ability to follow written and verbal instructions

Personal qualities

The successful candidate must be:

  • Reliable.
  • Have excellent communication skills.
  • A positive and ‘can do’ attitude, be an excellent time-keeper.
  • Be responsible and share a true passion for motor vehicles with a willingness and desire to learn.

Qualifications required

Maths & English at GCSE or equivalent grade A to C are preferred but not essential. As part of our Initial Assessment process we carry out a basic skills assessment to measure your current level in English, Maths and ICT. NLG is looking for applicants that are capable of achieving at least Level 1 Functional Skill in each subject at the assessment.

Candidates with a GCSE grade C or higher in any of these subjects will not have to study them as part of their apprenticeship.

Future prospects

Following the completion of your Intermediate Apprenticeship (18 to 24 months), we recommend that you continue onto an advanced apprenticeship (12 months) to become a fully qualified Light Vehicle Technician. There are then a number of opportunities for progression within the Motor Industry including: - Estimator - Senior Technician - Workshop Manager

Things to consider

The specific hours and days that you will be required to work and attend college will be discussed in more detail at the employer interview and by North London Garages once you have been accepted on to the Apprenticeship programme. The successful candidate will be willing and able to travel to their place of work for 4 days and attend training at one of our centres for one day a week. This may involve commuting.

Training provider

Successful candidates will have full time employment with training in a garage and day release at one of our training centres or approved college to work towards achieving Level 2 qualification (over 18 to 24 months), leading onto a Level 3 qualification over a further 12 months.

You will shadow qualified technicians at work so that you are able to learn first-hand the various aspects of vehicle body and paint repair. As you progress through the course and your confidence and experience grows, you will be able to complete tasks on your own but under supervision.

One of our assessors will visit you in your work place to mentor you and assess your competence regularly. This is part of our close support network NLG provides to ensure that Apprentices are both enjoying and succeeding in their course.

North London Garages have rolling college courses which start approximately every 3 months. Our college site for body repair is located in Enfield (North London). To apply, you must be able to travel to college once a week.
