Duties include:

  • To undertake apprenticeship training to learn the theory and practice of professional cookery from trainers and management.
  • To help prepare quality food to which our customers will enjoy.
  • To make sure that the kitchen, dining and service areas are clean tidy and attractive during opening times.
  • To make sure portion control, preparation and storage methods, and to avoid wastage to keep down costs.
  • To complete all COSHH & HACCP documentation.
  • To help prepare and present food in a way which will encourage customers to enjoy their meals.
  • Dealing with deliveries and making sure that stock is put away in a safe manner, with stock rotation happening.
  • To assist with the washing up and keeping the Catering Department clean, as per cleaning schedule.
  • Maintaining high standards of hygiene in line with the food policy management system.
  • Assisting senior staff with the setup of functions.
  • To assist in any area of the catering operation as and when required.

Qualifications required

GCSE C or above in Maths and English is desirable but not essential

Future prospects

There may be an opportunity to progress to a higher apprenticeship and/or possibly permanent employment within the College or if not have the experience and qualifications to find a permanent role easily.

Things to consider

• You need to have the commitment to work and study meaning putting in your own time to achieve success. • You will be working as part of a team in a busy environment. From 1st of April 2017 the National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 or over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. Those between the ages of 19-24 who are in their second year (or third year) need to be paid the National Minimum Wage for their age bracket. In April 2016 the new National Living Wage was implemented and therefore if you are over the age of 25 and in your second or third year of an Apprenticeship you will be entitled to be paid the National Living Wage. About the employer

St Lawrence College is a boarding and day school in Ramsgate, East Kent for pupils aged 3-18. It is a member of the prestigious HMC group of schools and was founded in 1879, with the Junior School being a member of IAPS. There are currently over 600 pupils across the College, with around 200 in the Junior School (which includes the Nursery) and over 400 in the Senior School (from Year 7). Numbers have grown substantially in recent years, with the Senior School now effectively at its current capacity of around 420, whilst the Junior School is set for further growth. At the same time, numbers per year group are deliberately kept at a maximum of about 70 to maintain the close community ethos of the College, which leans heavily upon a strong Christian foundation.
