    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage rates are £4.05 an hour for 16 - 17 year olds, £5.60 an hour for 18 - 20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship(usually one day per week).

    5 days a week, working a rota that includes weekends. 8 am – 4.30 pm 15 minute free break in the morning and 30 minute break for lunch to be deducted from timesheet.

  • Commis Chef reporting to the Head Chef and Senior Sous Chef
  • Learn basic skills with regards chopping and preparing meals, with more responsibility being placed on apprentice once these skills have been mastered. Learning basic knife skills.
  • Assist and work under the guidance of other chefs preparing dishes for the day’s service, using fresh ingredients and learning seasonal product rotation.
  • Assist and work alongside different station Chefs, covering all areas of the kitchen, including pastry section. Understanding the importance of following procedure, for example with regards to food allergens and free from menus.
  • Follow exemplary examples of Food Hygiene and Health & Safety procedures, gaining level 2 qualifications in both.
  • Gain a competent knowledge of kitchen paper work in compliance with regulations.
  • Participate in daily and weekly cleaning rotas and maintain area of work to a high standard.
  • Understand Stock rotation and assist with deliveries.

Desired skills

  • A passion for food & cooking and the desire to learn the skills required to become an excellent chef.
  • You must be able to demonstrate you can retain information and follow instructions.

Personal qualities

  • We are looking for a motivated and reliable addition to our existing team, you must have good inter personal skills and be able to communicate effectively with your colleagues.
  • You will need to demonstrate a positive attitude to your work and have drive and enthusiasm.
  • Excellent time keeper.

Qualifications required

  • Pass in English & Maths, along with a qualification in Food technology or similar.

Future prospects

We would like to progress the apprentice through training and see them move into a position of Chef de Partie, which entails greater responsibility within the kitchen. They would also be able to apply for wider opportunities within the coffee shop front of house and garden centre departments (retail/office/plant production nursery).

Things to consider

No Evening work, apart from occasional Charity events, Awards evenings or our Christmas Shopping night, with these being at the maximum 5 per year. Free Parking. The role requires the candidate to be able to spend long hours on their feet in a hot busy environment. NMW for their age group NOT NMW apprentice wage. Time and a half paid at weekends and bank holidays (for which you are also given a day’s holiday in lieu).

Perrywood Coffee Shop & restaurant is based within the Perrywood Garden Centre, this is a family run, award winning business and is driven to deliver dishes that are prepared using locally sourced ingredients and supporting other local business. We pride ourselves on delivering exceptional customer service and food that shows our attention to detail. For example, we cook all our meals – breakfasts, lunches and cake/cream tea/afternoon tea - from scratch including making all our own stocks and sauces. The restaurant has around 260 covers and is busy and fast paced. The Coffee Shop employs around 50 staff with 10 full time Chefs plus a weekend chef and early morning baker. We have 150 employees across the whole business. We have recently refurbished our dining areas, and expanded our kitchen – which has modern equipment and well thought-out lay out.
