    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

  • Working week

    To work 5 days per week -40 hours (will work alternate weekends.) Flexibility to work longer with seasonal increase in trade – at times such as Spring and Christmas. Occasional late night opening.

Ensure customers are served quickly and efficiently 

  • Establish and maintain good relationships with customers 
  • Ensure the counter area is kept presentable, clean and well stocked using stock rotation procedures 
  • To ‘up-sell’ in a customer focus manner 
  • Assist in ensuring high standards of hygiene and cleanliness are maintained throughout the Catering areas 
  • Prepare salads and vegetables and all food
  • Prepare filled sandwiches and baguettes etc… 
  • Cook a selection of basic food dishes ensuring correct portion control is maintained 
  • To fully understand and implement hygiene legislation governing the preparation, handling and storage of food and drinks
  • Greeting customers who enter the establishment
  • Being responsible for processing cash and card payments
  • Reporting discrepancies and problems to the supervisor
  • Replenishment and merchandising
  • Dealing with customer refunds
  • Keeping the kitchen & coffee lounge tidy and clean, this includes hoovering and mopping
  • Serving food and drink to customers
  • Restocking condiments
  • General kitchen duties also involved
  • You must have good practical ability and a good knowledge of working to food hygiene and safety regulations which will also be taught.

Qualifications required

Ideally to have GCSE A* - C in English & Maths or equivalent qualifications, or be working towards these.

Computer literate desirable but not essential.

Future prospects

When you have successfully completed your Apprenticeship, you may have the opportunity to progress to an NVQ level 3 in Retail/Catering or continue in that role to build yourself up to a supervisory level. Permanent employment for successful candidate upon completion of qualification.

Things to consider

Although starting on the minimum apprenticeship wage this will be reviewed and incremental increases given based on performance. The position is in a busy, fast paced environment and will involve long periods of being active and standing. So a reasonable level of fitness is required.

About the employer

We are a traditional family run garden centre based in Howden, East Yorkshire, with a great emphasis on gardening. Most of our plants are sourced from British nurseries & Holland who provide regular and often weekly deliveries of fresh stock. We have a lovely coffee lounge and host a range of gifts to tempt our customers. We are convenient to many people travelling form all over Yorkshire and you will find a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and on hand to answer your queries. Many have been with California Gardens for over 10 years and some over 35 years! We have been established as a family garden centre since 1879, and the Hall family prides itself in not only looking after their customers but also their employees. We currently employ approximately 25 people both full time and part time.
