This is an exciting opportunity for an apprentice to gain valuable practical experience within the Highway Maintenance sector working for this well established company

The apprentices will be working as a Site Operative / Groundworker within Carnell Technology & Infrastructure (T&I) division

Main duties will include:

  • Groundworking –digging shallow trenches for foundations and drains
  • Concreting – laying concrete for foundations
  • Road working – concreting, laying kerbs, paving and re-surfacing
  • You will use various hand, power and machine tools and, with further experience and training, you could operate construction plant such as dumpers or excavators

The role will require you to:

  • Carry out your work to the highest standards, adopting a ‘right first time’ approach
  • Adhere to Carnell safety policy and standards
  • Communicate well within your team

You will work outdoors in all weather conditions and the work can be physically demanding. You will be expected to wear protective clothing at all times, such as full reflective jacket & trousers, safety helmet and boots

Following successful shortlisting Interviews will be held in Leeds

Due to the nature of the work, and for insurance purposes, the apprentice will need to be 18 years old or over

You will be required to pass your driving test within the duration of the apprenticeship as the apprentice may be assigned a vehicle to go to other sites. Initially lifts will be provided to and from work location

The apprentice must be prepared to work away from home and to travel. You could be away from home for up to 5 days a week (weekdays only). You will be put up in a reputable hotel and receive allowances

  • To be 18 years old or over due to the nature of the work and for insurance purposes

  • Be required to pass a driving test within the duration of the apprenticeship

Qualifications required

Things to consider

Whilst the starting salary will be £200 per week, this will increase to £250 per week after 6 months and then again to £300 per week after 12 months, depending on Performance. Due to the nature of the industry sector, some sites could require longer travelling times and may involve periods away from home, potentially up to five days in some instances (weekdays only). The apprentice will be put up in a reputable hotel and receive allowances. This would be discussed further on starting. The apprenticeship will include day release to Telford College. This will be in blocks of 3 days, and will occur 5-6 times per year. The apprentice will be reimbursed for any travel expenses and will be provided with hotel accommodation whilst in Telford. You will need to undertake a medical examination as it is essential that you are fit and healthy as you will be working on the side of motorways, so good sight, hearing etc. will be needed. 6 positions are available across different locations. Following successful shortlisting Interviews will be held in Leeds. Telford College are managing this vacancy on behalf of this company. As part of the screening process of applications you may be contacted by Telford College and invited in for a face to face interview as part of our screening process. Training on the Apprenticeships Programme for 16 to 18 year olds is a priority and fully-funded by Government. Training for Apprenticeships for those over this age is part funded, with employers expected to make a part or full contribution. The current National Minimum Wage (NMW) for apprentices from the 1st April 2017 is £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. The new NMW applies to time working plus time spent training as this is also part of the Apprenticeship. Anyone not covered by this age category above will be entitled to the NMW appropriate for their age.
