  • Berthon has an opportunity for a Marine Shipwright Apprentice.
  • We have major commercial and private contracts working on Yachts and Motor boats up to 100ft LOA.
  • Apprentices work in a structured environment learning all aspects of Marine construction, repair and fit-out.
  • As well as Technical Certificates and NVQ all shipwright apprentices undergo product specific technical training including GRP lay-up at Southampton Solent University.

Qualifications required

5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*-C including Maths and English plus Resistant Materials or relevant science subject. For school leavers, predicted grades will be accepted.

Things to consider

This is a technical apprenticeship so you must a have strong aptitude for practical work. The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year. Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year. The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over. Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

About the employer

Berthon has a long history of boat construction and marine engineering in the commercial sector; building boats for search and rescue, pilot, patrol, survey and multi-role workboat applications. We also provide commercial boat repairs, refits, maintenance and in-service support that meet the expectations of our commercial clients and partners. We have experienced project management teams that fully understand the tough demands placed on workboats within the commercial environment.

Training provider

The successful candidate will undertake an Apprenticeship including both on and off the job training.

The college training will be carried out by Brockenhurst College at the Marchwood Construction and Marine Technologies Unit on a day release basis.

An Advanced Apprenticeship in Marine Engineering comprises of the following:

  • C&G Level 3 in Marine Engineering (Marine Boatbuilding)
  • NVQ Level 3 in Marine Engineering (Marine Boatbuilding)
  • Functional Skills in English, Maths and ICT
  • ERR Certificate
  • Various Berthon courses such as: Health & Safety, product specific technical training including GRP laminating courses at Southampton Solent University, LEAN manufacturing as applicable

Training will be part of the contracted hours agreed that makes up the working week.
