    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Essential qualifications, experience and skills:

  • Good interpersonal, communication and customer service skills
  • Excellent organisational and administrative skills, including attention to detail
  • Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team
  • Excellent IT skills: knowledge of MS Office – Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint, Outlook including ability to format reports, run mail merges
  • Ability to work accurately to tight deadlines

  • Developing a basic understanding of HR policies and procedures
  • Maintain HR employee files and ensure the effective filing and storage of records (electronic and hard copy)
  • Responsible for the on-boarding of new employees to include checking of new starter documentation and ensuring legal compliance
  • Assisting with the issuing and receiving of  contracts of employment and contractual changes
  • Assisting with the administration of absence information and record keeping
  • Assisting with the administration of information to process the payroll
  • Working with HR team and line managers to arrange interviews, provide interview schedules and collect interview feedback
  • Working with HR Manager to arrange training and development programmes across the Company
  • Attending employee relation meetings to take notes and provide administrative support to investigating officers
  • Responsible for updating information in HR system and assist with the development of processes to improve departmental service delivery

About the employer

We are looking for someone who is able work confidently with other people, phone calls and customer service, we need you to work on your own initiative, thrive under pressure, enjoy a challenge and able to multi task. We opened in 1910 and are named after Professor John Taylor, an eminent gynaecologist who worked at the Birmingham and Women’s Hospital. The hospice was funded by the people of Birmingham inspired by Dr Mary Darby Sturge, a consultant anaesthetist at the same hospital and a local GP. Dr Darby Sturge formed a group of influential local people and volunteers to champion the new facility and raise the money. The John Taylor Memorial Home provided palliative care for women and the women who came were encouraged to make a contribution to the home. This was important because it symbolised mutual respect. People who could pledge financial support to the home were encouraged to sponsor a bed. Originally sited on Park Road in Sparkbrook, in 1946/7 our founders raised enough money to buy The Grange at 76 Grange Road in Erdington and £10,000 to refurbish it, creating 20 beds. John Taylor Hospice moved to The Grange after the Second World War. Our house is the former home of East Birmingham MP and famed photographer Sir Benjamin Stone.
