The Unciorn in Porthtowan is seeking an enthusiastic individual, with a passion for food, to join their professional team as an Apprentice to the Head Chef. 

You would be trained in all aspects of cooking meals in a busy kitchen, all aspects of Health and Safety in the workplace and use of catering equipment in our busy kitchen. As your skills develop so will your duties and responsibilities.

These will include:

  • Working under the Head Chef in creating dishes and meals
  • Inspecting and ensuring the quality of ingredients
  • Preparing ingredients for meals
  • Measuring ingredients and portion sizes
  • Giving input to menus and specials
  • Work to improve the quality of dishes
  • Helping with deliveries and storage of stock
  • Ensuring good hygiene and health and safety at all times

Qualifications required

Maths and English GCSE or equivalent Grade C or above would be preferable but this is not essential.

Future prospects

For the right candidate there is the chance to become the Second Chef / Commis Chef.

Things to consider

Transport to and from the workplace needs to be considered if you do not live in Porthtowan. The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year. Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year. The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over. Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week). For more information visit:
